Karabooza: Herzschmerz auf die Fresse
Atmosphärisch dicht, hin und wieder düster und melancholisch. Tiefe Gitarren in einem Mantel aus Elektronica und dazu wehmütig klagender Rock-Gesang: Karabooza dehnen die Schnittmenge von Rock und Metal weit aus und empfehlen sich so einem breiten Publikum. 2024 erscheint mit „The Beauty Of Bad Decisions“ das neue Album der Band.
„Bei Playlisten sind wir für Rock zu hart und für Metal zu soft“, witzelt Christoph Fuchs, Gitarrist von Karabooza, wenn man ihn nach dem Genre seiner Band befragt. Man könnte seine Aussage allerdings auch so deuten: Die vierköpfige Truppe aus Koblenz legt die Genres Rock und Metal so variabel aus, dass die Schnittmenge ein besonders breites Publikum anspricht.
Verortet man Karabooza im Alternative Metal, dann liegt man nicht völlig daneben – Parallelen zu Korn und Alter Bridge finden sich ebenso wie zu HIM und Linkin Park. Elektronica umsirren tiefe Gitarren und betten den, meist wehmütig klagenden, Rock-Gesang in druckvoller Härte ein. Der Gesamteindruck der Songs ist atmosphärisch dicht, zuweilen düster und melancholisch, der Sound kommt in modern aufgeweiteten Arrangements mit Synthesizer-Sounds und Samples daher.

Womit wir mittendrin wären in Karaboozas Live-Performance: Diese ist durchkonzipiert und eng getaktet wie eine Therapiereise. Dabei gibt das Intro die jeweilige Reiseroute vor. Durch die Finsternis zieht ein heller Klang, wie Weltraumsummen, oder ein sphärischer Gong, hinein wummert ein Herzschlag – tief und friedlich. Karabooza wissen, wie man erwartungsfrohe Neugierde erzeugt. Eine Frauenstimme leitet das Publikum in einer Art geführten Meditation. Dann lichtet sich die Dunkelheit und Frontmann Philipp Iskariot beginnt den ersten Song. Wie ein Reiseleiter führt er durch die Live-Show, deren technische Finesse von Drummer Felix Haun ausbaldowert wird.
Das Konzept kommt an: 2020 haben Karabooza den internationalen Warsteiner Music Contest gewonnen. Auf diesen Erfolg ist die Band tatsächlich ein bisschen stolz, denn sie hat sich unter einer vierstelligen Anzahl an Konkurrenten behauptet.
Ihre eigene Reise begann das Koblenzer Quartett übrigens 2018. Seither haben Karabooza in Eigenregie zwei EPs, ein Album sowie zwei Singles herausgebracht – aufgenommen im Studio des Bassisten Markus Nöthen. Nun folgt das zweite Album, das die Band wieder selbst produziert.
Karaboozas Album „The Beauty Of Bad Decisions” erscheint 2024 mit vierzehn Songs bei Bleeding Nose Records.
Karabooza: Heartache in your face
Atmospherically dense, sometimes dark and melancholic. Low tuned guitars wrapped in a cloak of electronica and melancholy rock vocals. Karabooza expand the overlap of rock and metal and thus commend themselves to a wide audience. The band’s new album, „The Beauty Of Bad Decisions“ is going to be released in 2024.
“When it comes to playlists, we’re too hard for rock and too soft for metal“, Karabooza guitarist Christoph Fuchs jokes when asked about his band’s genre. However, one could also interpret his statement as follows: The quartet from Koblenz, Germany, varies rock and metal in such an extensive way that the overlap appeals to a particularly wide audience.
If you class Karabooza as alternative metal though, you are not completely mistaken – parallels to Korn and Alter Bridge can be found as well as to HIM and Linkin Park. Electronics surround low tuned guitars and embed the, predominantly gloomy, rock vocals in powerful harshness. The overall impression of the songs, whose sound comes in modern arrangements with synthesiser sounds and samples, is atmospherically dense, occasionally dark and melancholic.

Which brings us right to Karabooza’s live performance: It is meticulously structured and tightly timed like a therapy journey. The intro specifies the itinerary. A bright sound, like a space hum or a spherical gong, resonates through the darkness, then a heartbeat throbs – deep and peaceful. Karabooza know how to generate expectant curiosity. A female voice leads the audience into a kind of guided meditation. Then the darkness clears and frontman Philipp Iskariot strikes up the first song. Like a tour guide, he leads through the live show, whose technical finesse is designed by drummer Felix Haun.
The concept is well received: In 2020, Karabooza won the international Warsteiner Musik Contest. Actually, the band is a bit proud of this success, because they stood out among a four-digit number of competitors.
By the way, the quartet began its own journey in 2018. Since then, Karabooza has self-released two EPs, one album and two singles – recorded in bassist Markus Nöthen’s studio. In 2024, their second album “The Beauty Of Bad Decisions“, which the band has self-produced once more, is going to be released containing fourteen songs.
